You Ask Me - Article by Canadian Sculptor Hilary Clark Cole
You ask me, "Where do you get your ideas?" and, "How long does it take to finish a sculpture?" My sculptural life began in a garden.
As a child, I ventured forth to make people and things from the materials I found there. Sticks, poppy heads, milkweed pods, stones, bits of glass, leaves and tendrils held endless fascination.
Here I am, still in the garden, remembering my father, whose talented hands taught me so much, and whose father, in turn, was a blacksmith.
So when you ask me these questions, this is my answer: "It is from heritage and memories and childhood. Where does a garden get its ideas, and when is it finished?"
